Personally, the lighting reminds me of the time I went to a battle of the bands at Peabody's in Cleveland, OH. It was kinda dark and the lights that were there weren't ever truly white. Most of them took on a yellow-orange color. The stage was the main source of light, and most of the stage lights were blue, purple, red, and such. When you leave the background so open to interpretation, you can sometimes connect with the viewer on a deeper level than "nice picture". Personally, I had forgotten about Peabody's until seeing this. Now I'm remembering how much fun I had and how hoarse my voice was after screaming for Them & I to win.
I love art like this, it always reminds me of indie and I don't know why. Maybe because it focus's on just one thing and doesn't have bells and whistles and it's simple. It's a bloke chewing on his nails, and you can imagine your own scene surrounding him. Like me... I can picture him sitting in a coffee shop somewhere waiting for someone, worrying about if they'll show up. Or maybe he's at home sitting in front of a computer and this is his habit.
